KAC 1909

Walter Werginz took the pitch for Austria at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 and came home with a silver medal, having learned his football on the Sportplatz of Klagenfurter Athletiksport Club Fußball. It was the first club Carinthia ever had, founded on 18 September 1909 under a longer name that only in 2012 was shortened and dated to KAC 1909.

They turned it down. Locally, the club's currency was never the national game but the Carinthian one: nine Landesmeister titles between 1922 and 1964, three regional cup wins, and in 1937 a run to the semi-finals of the Austrian Amateur Championship.

Relegation from the Regionalliga Mitte in 1969 marked the point where that currency stopped buying much. The club slid through the lower divisions and has settled, for the modern era, in the Kärntner Liga, the fourth tier. Peter and Friedrich Koncilia passed through its ranks on their way to the Austrian national team. What still gets an afternoon crowd out to Magazingasse is the Klagenfurt Derby, against SK Austria Klagenfurt and SV Donau Klagenfurt, played in a 2,500-capacity ground with no floodlights. A first flight appearance is the one line missing from KAC's record — the 1951 promotion it turned down has never come round again.
