Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi holds 18,000 after its renovation, but for an U-20 side it is scale enough, and it keeps Kenya's youth teams tied to the same ground and the same red-and-black identity as the senior team they feed.

The Rising Stars are not a club in the ordinary sense but an age-grade selection, refreshed every cycle, so its history reads as a series of tournaments rather than seasons. The first of note came in 1979, when Kenya reached the final of the African Youth Championship and lost to Nigeria. What followed was a near five-decade absence from that stage; the side did not return to a continental U-20 finals until 2025, in Egypt, under the newly formatted U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Regionally the record is thinner on gaps: Kenya won the CECAFA U-20 Championship in 1975 and again in 1999, beating Uganda 2-1 in the latter final. A runner-up finish to Tanzania in 2024 supplied the qualification that finally ended the long wait for Egypt, where Kenya finished bottom of Group B.

Lawrence Okoth's goal against Nigeria in that tournament stood out for reasons beyond the scoreline: it was the first ever scored by a Kenyan player at the U-20 AFCON, a marker for a side more often defined by absence from the stage than by results on it. Salim Babu managed the squad through that campaign, and Amos Wanjala captained the qualifying run that got them there.

Kenya's sharpest contests remain regional rather than continental. Uganda U20 and Tanzania U20 supply the fixtures that carry weight year to year, the CECAFA championship still the more reliable measure of where the age group stands than any wider tournament Kenya has only recently begun to reach again.
