Largs Thistle

A junior club in a seaside Ayrshire town, Largs Thistle grew out of the same local football culture that filled Scotland's west coast with village sides in the late nineteenth century, taking shape in 1889. Junior football in Scotland has never meant youth football — it means clubs playing outside the senior professional pyramid, often with as much local weight as anything above them, and Largs Thistle have spent well over a century as one of Ayrshire's fixtures in that world.

The high point came in 1994, when Thistle went to Ibrox and beat Glenafton Athletic 1–0 in front of 8,000 spectators to lift the Scottish Junior Cup. It was the kind of result written up afterwards as David against Goliath, a small-town side taking the national trophy on the biggest stage available to it. They have come close since without repeating it, losing Scottish Junior Cup finals to Linlithgow Rose in 2010 and twice to Auchinleck Talbot, most recently in 2025–26.

Most of the rest of the honours board is local rather than national — the Ayrshire Second Division taken three times, the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald Cup won across three different decades.

Thistle play in gold and black at Barrfields Park on Brisbane Road, their home since 1930, where the ground can hold 4,500 and be stretched to nearly 7,875 when the occasion calls for it, in a town that has watched this club for well over a hundred years.
