Lokomotiv Mezdra

In Mezdra the railway is in the club's name, and it is in the nickname too: The Irons from Mezdra. Lokomotiv began in 1945 as a railway sports club, and the ironwork of the nickname points back to the town's railroad history. The same season, 1945–46, the side reached the quarter-finals of the Bulgarian Cup.

The trophy the club values most came in 2003, when Lokomotiv won the European Railways Cup.

The league story came later. In 2008 Lokomotiv won promotion to the Bulgarian First League, known as the A Group, and finished 8th in 2008–09. That is still the best placing the club has reached in the top flight. The players wore red and black.

The academy supplied one name that reached well beyond Mezdra. Tsvetan Genkov came through the youth system and was the top scorer in the Bulgarian A PFG in 2006/07.

The fixture that matters most to the supporters is against Botev Vratsa. The two clubs meet in the Northwestern Derby, and the clubs have a rivalry that is as much about the region as about the table.
