Metalurgistul Cugir

Three times the club has climbed out of Romania's third tier as champions.

That first version of the club died in 2004, after a season in Divizia C. It took four years for the town to put something back together under the name CSO Cugir, and later a separate association was carved out to satisfy the federation's rules, which is how Metalurgistul got its 1939 back.

The wartime seasons are the odd corner of the record. In 1942–43 the works team took first place in its Divizia B series under Grațian Sepi, a former Romania international who was still playing while he picked the side, and then lost the play-off that would have taken them up.

Dumitru Dinea gave the club 22 years and was there for its first promotion to Divizia B; people in Cugir still talk about him rather than about the trophies.

The fixture that mattered was against Unirea Alba Iulia, and it mattered most in the 1990s, when both were in the second division and the two towns spent the week arguing about it. It has cooled since — in 2021 Cugir's board publicly asked that Unirea be spared bankruptcy.

Arena Cugir holds 4,000, only 1,200 of them seated. The second division remains where the club has not been for a long time.
