The royal title came first, and the club it belonged to did not last. A team calling itself Real Jaén F.C. had been founded in 1922 and was granted the "Real" prefix in the autumn of 1923, through a petition at the court of Alfonso XIII. Four years later the money ran out and it folded. What replaced it in June 1929, Sociedad Olímpica Jiennense, carried none of that: it played under the Olympic name for eighteen years, and only in September 1947 did the Spanish federation permit the change to Real Jaén Club de Fútbol. The club counts both lines as its own.

The white kit — shirt, shorts and socks — is where the nickname Los Blancos comes from, but the away strip is the more particular of the two.

The old La Victoria was replaced in 2001 by the Nuevo Estadio La Victoria, which holds 12,569.
