Tab Ramos spent eight years running the United States under-20 side, and the defining moment came in 2018, when the CONCACAF U-20 Championship was played on home soil. The Americans won all eight matches and scored 46 goals.

The team goes back further than that. Its first recorded fixture came on 2 April 1964, a 1-1 draw with Jamaica at a CONCACAF youth tournament in Guatemala. The founding of the side as an institution is harder to pin down; the match is not.

Home, in as much as a national youth team has one, is the IMG Academy Stadium in Bradenton, Florida, which holds 1,500. The ground doubles as a training base, used for qualifying matches and for camps before major tournaments.

Mexico is a fixture that shapes the calendar. The two have met in finals that decided both the regional title and World Cup places, including 2024 and 2026.

The high mark is fourth place at the 1989 tournament in West Berlin, where they lost the third-place match to Brazil 2-1. Since then it has been quarter-finals — 1993, 2003, 2007, 2015, 2023, 2025 — and no further.
