Víkingur Gøta

Leirvík and Norðragøta sit next door to each other on Eysturoy, and for years each village sent its own side out to play. GÍ Gøta held a place in the top flight; Leirvík ÍF worked away in the second division. Talks began in the summer of 2007 over whether two small villages could between them sustain one club that would hold its own at the highest level. The merger went through on 14 January 2008, and three weeks later the new side settled on a name — Víkingur, after Trøndur, a Viking of Gøta from around a thousand years ago, and after the Norse root of Leirvík itself.

The answer to whether it would work arrived quickly. Fifth place in that first top-flight season, then the Faroese Cup in 2009, won 3:2 against EB/Streymur with Finnur Justinussen scoring the goal that decided it.

European nights came in 2014. Víkingur put out Daugava of Latvia and then Tromsø of Norway to reach the third qualifying round of the Europa League — no Faroese club had cleared two rounds before. The league title itself took longer, arriving in 2016 and again in 2017, with a third in 2024.

Atli Gregersen captained the side through all three of those championship seasons and was named the Faroe Islands' footballer of the year in 2024. His son, Árni Nóa Atlason, has since played for the national team.

Home is Sarpugerði in Norðragøta, sky blue shirts and black shorts, a ground listed at 3,000 with 445 of those seated. Jóhan Petur Poulsen has been in charge since 2020 and took the club back to the top of the league in 2024.
