«The Brewers»
The club began under the name of a man rather than a town. On 1 December 1929 it was founded as Panayot Volov, and the name has outlasted every later reshaping of the club. It is also the name of the ground.
The yellow and blue colours come from Shumensko, the beer brewed in Shumen. That is where the nickname The Brewers comes from.
The club's strongest decades were the 1970s and 1980s. It won the second tier, the B PFG, in 1971–72 and again in 1982–83. The peak came in 1993–94, when Volov finished fourth in the top flight, the A PFG, and took a place in the UEFA Cup. Cup football had already brought two semi-finals, in 1956–57 and 2005–06.
Decline followed. Volov won the third-tier North-East V AFG in 2011–12, and two years later the senior team folded. The stadium shows how far things had fallen. It once held 24,390 spectators, 21,765 of them seated. Only part of the stands are in use now, and the licensed capacity is 3,500.
The club was refounded on 26 July 2018 as Volov 1929 Shumen, and the year in the name was deliberate. In 2024 it merged with Shumen 2007 to become FC Volov Shumen 2007. It still counts its age from 1929.
Volov has never won the Bulgarian Cup or the league title.
