The name gives it away before anything else does: this is not the stadium, it is the ground next to it, the reserve pitch tucked into the Meskhi complex on Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue in Vake. Mikheil Meskhi Stadium II is that second building.
Georgia's under-19, under-17 and under-21 sides have used the pitch for UEFA qualifying fixtures, and the women's national team has taken European Championship and Nations League matches there rather than into the main arena a few hundred metres away. That is the pattern worth noting.
It has occasionally been pulled into first-team competition anyway. In September 2020, Lokomotivi Tbilisi hosted Dinamo Moscow here in the UEFA Europa League and won 2-1.
