3-Feld-Sporthalle Großröhrsdorf
Großröhrsdorf, Germany
The 3-Feld-Sporthalle in Großröhrsdorf does not sit alone on a sports complex. It is embedded in the school centre that serves the local gymnasium and secondary school, meaning the roar of a handball crowd mixes with the sound of pupils heading to class.
What distinguishes the hall is its flexibility. Rather than a single court, the design accommodates three simultaneous games, a necessity for a town that relies on this facility for more than just elite sport.
HC Rödertal, known as 'Die Rödertalbienen', uses the main court for their women’s handball matches. These are games played in front of crowds that pack the 581 available seats. The roof is high, the lights are bright, and the surface is synthetic, typical for German indoor halls.
The construction took fifteen months and involved forty-five companies, many of them from the immediate Bautzen district. When the doors first opened, the Police Orchestra of Saxony played, and dignitaries stood in the stands. That was the beginning. Since then, the hall has hosted Bundesliga matches, school tournaments, and community gatherings.
