Äänekosken liikuntatalo

Äänekosken liikuntatalo is not a cathedral of sport, but a functional hall in the Finnish town of Äänekoski, and that distinction defines it. Built to coincide with the town’s 50th anniversary in 1982, the structure has a specific character visible from the street: the exterior bears the 'Urheiluhullut' (Sports Fanatics) relief sculpture, which won a facade competition that same year. The building is not merely an empty shell; it wears its history on the wall.

Inside, the floor is wooden parquet, laid out for the demands of basketball, floorball, and handball. It is a multi-purpose space, shared by local clubs like Kipinä Basket and the basketball section of Äänekosken Huima. The capacity is a matter of record-keeping rather than atmosphere. Two sources disagree on the number: the World Stadiums Archive lists 1,500, while Courts of the World suggests 1,200. The official city website does not specify a figure, so the exact limit remains uncertain.

What matters more is the sound of the game played within those walls. On 15 April 2026, the hall held over 600 spectators for an I-divisioona semi-final decider, watching Kipinä Basket defeat Karkkila 102–91. That is the kind of number that fills a small arena. The facility underwent a major renovation completed in 2019 by Rakennusliike Porrassalmi Oy, ensuring the floors hold up under the weight of the next generation.

It is a place where basketball players sweat and where Olympic champion Samppa Lajunen once appeared at a community event. There are no former sponsored names to complicate the identity; it is Äänekosken liikuntatalo. Located at Koulumäenkatu 2, it is the main indoor sports hall for the town, serving as a backdrop for national weightlifting championships. It is a gymnasium with a roof, and for the people of Äänekoski, that is enough.
