The place has changed its name four times since the gates first opened. It began as the Kirklees Stadium, then carried Alfred McAlpine, then Galpharm, then John Smith's, and now Accu. What has not changed is the reason it exists: Huddersfield Town needed somewhere to go after Leeds Road, and the new ground was ready for the start of the 1994–95 season. The first match was played on 20 August 1994, in front of 13,334.

Because not much had been built. The ground opened with around 14,000 seats and stayed that way for four years, until the North Stand went up in 1998 and took it to roughly 24,500. So the arena that stands on Stadium Way today is really two projects, four years apart.

The surface is the other thing worth knowing. In 1996 this became the first professional ground in Britain to have the Desso GrassMaster hybrid system laid — natural grass stitched through with synthetic fibres.

Football is not the only sport it holds.
