The ground sits on the left bank of the Ak-Buura, a short walk from Osh's central square. It was renamed for Akhmatbek Suyumbayev, a Soviet-era statesman, after his death in 1993 — for the three decades before that it went by nothing more than Central Stadium, or Central Stadium "Osh".

Between its opening in 1961 and 2023, the ground had never been through a major rebuild. The current reconstruction is changing that: more than 11,000 of its 12,000 seats have been replaced, the changing rooms and running track redone, and the natural turf is set to give way to a hybrid pitch once the work is finished.

Two clubs from Kyrgyzstan's top division call it home, Alay and OshSU-Aldier. It has also carried occasions beyond league football: in 2019 it hosted events marking Osh as a cultural capital of the Turkic world, and in 2022 it staged the final of the Osh Mayor's Cup, where Bunedkor saw the game out 2-1 against Alay.
