Al-Nasiriya International Stadium

The new stand in Nasiriyah does not look like its predecessor. Where the old ground, built in the 1960s and demolished after years of neglect, held roughly 10,000 people, the replacement opened in August 2024 with space for 20,000. The difference is not merely capacity but the scale of the ambition behind it.

The project began with a French design team and was interrupted by political friction; the original contractors were dismissed in early 2022 over delays. The result is a structure built for a specific climate rather than a generic template. It lacks a running track, focusing entirely on the pitch and the tiers of seating. The surface is natural grass, which the managing director described as being of a quality comparable to the top European clubs.

What sets the venue apart is its attempt to embed local history into the concrete. The architect incorporated 132 pillars into the design, shaped to resemble ancient Sumerian tools, and a sound spectrogram pattern runs through the seating area, intended to echo the noise of Iraqi fans. It is a quiet attempt to make the stadium feel rooted in the Dhi Qar Governorate rather than imported.

The stadium serves as the home for Al-Nasiriya Sport Club, known as the Sons of Sumer, and has also been listed as a venue for Al-Gharraf SC. While a larger Olympic project was once planned for the city, this ground stands as the primary football facility in the south. It replaced a site that had long been forgotten, and now holds the local team’s matches in a building that tries to speak to the past through its form.
