Alejandro Serrano Aguilar
Cuenca, Ecuador
Formerly: Estadio Municipal "El Ejido"
The Estadio Alejandro Serrano Aguilar Deportes Cuenca plays here, and the stadium has changed hands more than once. It opened in 1945 as Estadio Municipal "El Ejido," built by Honorato Carvallo, before being renamed 25 years later. A major rebuild in 1971 set the capacity at 20,000, but a later measurement by the Federación Deportiva del Azuay (FDA) cut the official number to 16,540. Recent reports suggest the figure has slipped further, though the old number remains the one most often printed. The stadium hosted matches during the 1993 Copa América, when crowds reportedly swelled beyond the current limits. It is now set for future fixtures, including a Copa Ecuador semifinal in December 2025 and a Supercopa final in June 2026. Plans to rebuild the ground from scratch have been floated for over a decade, with budgets reaching into the tens of millions, but none have moved past the drawing board. Instead, smaller fixes continue: new lighting, track resurfacing, and patches to the turf. The club’s official site runs the press, but the stadium itself has no separate digital home. What remains is the place itself.
