The Херцог и де Мёрон, working with «АрупСпорт», delivered the building for roughly €340–346m, and it opened on 30 May 2005 with a friendly between «Мюнхен 1860» and «Нюрнбергом».

Capacity is not one number here but two. For Бундеслига and Кубок Германии matches the ground holds 75,024. For UEFA competition and international fixtures it drops to about 70,000, because the terracing has to be converted to seats and the press given room.

The name changes with the competition too. Allianz Arena is the commercial title, contracted through 2041; during the 2006 World Cup it was FIFA WM-Stadion München, and for UEFA nights it becomes Fußball Arena München.

«Бавария» leased the ground from 2005, bought out «Мюнхена 1860» in 2006, and in 2017 the co-tenants were evicted over unpaid rent.

Beneath the sand-based pitch, the Rasenheizung under-soil system is moving off gas towards heat pumps drawing on the stadium's own solar panels.
