American Express Community Stadium
The ground that opened at Falmer in 2011 is not quite the ground standing there now. Brighton moved in with room for about 22,000 and then kept building: 27,250 for the 2012/13 season, 27,750 by that December, 30,750 by the end of the same campaign, and 32,176 once the final run of seats was in.
The construction phase was shorter than the expansion that followed it — December 2008 to May 2011, at a cost of £93 million, to a design by KSS Design Group.
Two matches opened the place within a week of each other. Tottenham came on 30 July 2011 for the official opening and won 3–1, with the hosts finding no answer; the first competitive fixture followed on 6 August, when Brighton beat Doncaster 2–1.
The surface is a hybrid rather than pure turf: Desso GrassMaster, natural grass stitched through with some 20 million synthetic fibres.
It carried a different name before a ball was kicked. The plans and the planning fight knew it as Falmer Stadium; from the day it opened it has been the American Express Community Stadium.
