The answer is

What makes this place different is the way the crowd fills it; the volunteers who built the new stand between 2008 and 2013 also built a community that stays.

Inside, the steel roof trusses hold up a cover that protects the standing terrace from the sides of Berlin. A banner runs along the top of the main stand, and the floodlights come on at the same time every evening. The pitch is natural grass, and the lines are painted white.

Stadion An der Alten Försterei does not hide behind advertising hoardings. The red seats are bare, the stairs are exposed concrete, and the nearest fan stands a few metres from the touchline. In the third photo, the stadium is empty after a match, with the pitch covered in a protective layer before the Christmas carols begin. The stands are quiet, but the structure shows how the capacity was rebuilt by hand. The ground has been here since 1920, and the people who use it still treat it as if they own it.
