Arena Castelão

The scoreboard number that matters most here is not the seating capacity but the crowd Castelão once held before the seats were counted so strictly: 118,496 for a friendly against Uruguay on 27 August 1980. That older, standing-room version of the ground also hosted Pope John Paul II that same year, a detail that still gets mentioned before any football score.

The stadium reopened on 16 December 2012 after a full reconstruction for the 2014 World Cup, and it earned its keep during the tournament itself, staging the match between the Netherlands and Mexico and a quarter-final for Brazil against Colombia. A year earlier it had already had a dress rehearsal, hosting a Confederations Cup semi-final between Spain and Italy. The ground has form with finals too, having closed out the Copa do Brasil in 1994, and the Copa do Nordeste in both 2014 and 2015.

Off the pitch, Castelão has doubled as a concert venue on a scale few Brazilian stadiums can match: Paul McCartney drew 48,668 in 2013, Beyoncé pulled 35,000 the same year, and Elton John and Roberto Carlos both played there in 2014.

Now shared by Ceará and Fortaleza, the ground still fills up for the derbies that matter locally, and even in its scaled-down modern form it can pack in a crowd — 63,908 turned out for a Ceará–América-MG Série B fixture in November 2024, a reminder that the old nickname, Gigante da Boa Vista, still fits.
