Arena du Pays d'Aix

Aix-en-Provence, France

The ground is defined by its shape. It sits on a freeway intersection in the south-west of Aix-en-Provence. Since its opening in 2017, the arena has served as the official residence of the PAUC handball team.

The structure itself is a study in modularity. The architects designed a space that can fold in on itself, shifting capacity depending on whether the event is a sporting fixture or a concert. For handball matches, the configuration holds 6,000 seated spectators. The retractable seating allows the space to expand for other events, though the primary focus remains the court.

The interior is functional, stripped of the ornamentation found in older European pavilions. The lighting is directed specifically at the playing surface, leaving the upper tiers of seats in shadow unless the arena is at full capacity for a spectacle. The design prioritises movement; the stands are arranged to allow quick access, a necessity for a venue that hosts both athletic competition and large-scale entertainment. The annex hall, accommodating 1,000 people, sits adjacent to the main floor, providing a secondary space for reserve teams without cluttering the primary arena.

The building does not attempt to blend with the historic centre of Aix-en-Provence. Instead, it marks its presence through scale. The concrete and steel structure reflects the industrial nature of its surroundings, a deliberate choice given the proximity to the motorway. The arena has operated under the same name since its inauguration, resisting the initial plans to sell naming rights to corporate sponsors. It stands as a distinct landmark in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, a modern addition to a region defined by its past.
