Asane Arena
Bergen, Norway
Formerly: Arena Nord
Åsane Arena in Bergen carries the weight of a rebuild. It is not the old Myrdal ground, but a facility that opened in September 2021 after the original general contractor went bankrupt. The project was originally developed under the name Arena Nord, but the name was officially changed to Åsane Arena in August 2020 after rights were transferred. The architectural design and project management were handled by Sørli Arkitekter, who took over significant responsibility after the collapse.
The venue was funded by the Trond Mohn Foundation. The playing surface is artificial turf, a full-size 11-a-side pitch that sees use beyond just football. The arena is notable for hosting international handball matches, including games for the Norwegian women’s national team against the Netherlands in the EHF Euro Cup in November 2021. It also hosted the Norwegian Winter Sports Championships in 2021.
For Åsane Fotball, the move was significant. The club currently plays its home matches here, leaving behind the approximately 3,000 capacity of its previous ground. The current seating capacity for football matches is officially cited as 3,300 by the club, though some sources and match reports indicate a capacity of 3,500 or 3,507. The official attendance record for a football match at the arena is 3,507, set on September 3, 2022. That was a derby against SK Brann during an OBOS-ligaen season. Åsane lost 0–2, but the crowd did not concede either.
Located at Åsane Senter 60, the facility is a quiet corner of Nyborg. It is a place where the local team can camp in the final third without fear of the storm outside.
