Ashgabat Stadium opened on 28 October 2011, timed to Independence Day and the twentieth anniversary of independence. Construction had run from 2009, with the Turkish contractor Polimeks working to a design by the Spanish studio Pujol Arquitectura.

No major reconstruction has been carried out in the years since the ribbon was cut, and no sponsor's name has been attached to it — the ground is still simply Ashgabat, after the city. It belongs to the city hakimlik and is run by the state committee for physical culture and sport, without a website of its own; administration goes through the committee's portal.

Three clubs treat it as home: Ahal , Altyn Asyr and Ashgabat , though the last of those is also associated with Nisa-Chandybil. The national side plays here too, on the same synthetic surface, in the Bagtyýarlyk district on the street of the same name.
