Ashton Gate

Bristol City moved in seventeen years after the ground first opened. England played Wales at rugby here in the Home Nations of 1908. New Zealand met Tonga at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. A women's Six Nations match followed in 2024, and in 2025 the ground is one of the venues for the women's Rugby World Cup.

Between 2014 and 2016 the Williams Stand and the Wedlock Stand came down, replaced by the Lansdown Stand and a rebuilt South Stand, at a cost of around £40m. Work finished in the third quarter of 2016 and left a 27,000-seat bowl.

The rebuild also brought the pitch itself up to date: a HERO hybrid mat system went in during the works.

The concerts came in 2019, when the Ashton Gate Summer Series brought Rod Stewart, Take That, Muse and the Spice Girls to Ashton Road across a run of nights that drew roughly 110,000 people. In 2021 the ground held the National League play-off final.

Through all of it the name has not moved. No sponsor has ever bought the naming rights: it has been Ashton Gate since 1887.
