Twice this ground has hosted the same fixture Europe's clubs chase every year. On 25 May 2005 Liverpool trailed Milan 3-0 at half-time in the Champions League final and clawed the score back to 3-3, then held their nerve in the shoot-out. On 10 June 2023, Manchester City settled their final against Inter with a single goal.

The stadium was built for a bid that never landed a Games — Istanbul's push for the 2008 Olympics — and it has spent the years since finding other work. Turkey's national team plays qualifiers and Nations League fixtures here, and a rotating cast of Istanbul clubs has used it as a home ground when their own stadiums were unavailable or under construction: Galatasaray for a season and part of a Champions League campaign, İstanbul Başakşehir for the better part of a decade, spells for Beşiktaş, Kasımpaşa and İstanbul BB, and Fatih Karagümrük since 2020. Sivasspor has turned up occasionally too, when the weather elsewhere made the point.

Capacity has drifted downward from where it started. UEFA's sightline standards trimmed the seat count ahead of the 2005 final, and a 2020 refit for new floodlights and media facilities pared it further to today's 77,563. A full rebuild was drawn up for Euro 2024, athletics track and all, chasing over 92,000 seats — shelved once the tournament went to Germany instead, with similar talk now circling Euro 2032.

Away from football, the ground's attendance record does not belong to a match at all: a Kanye West concert in May 2026 drew a crowd well past anything a Süper Lig night here has managed.
