Baba Yara Sports Stadium
Kumasi, Ghana
Formerly: Kumasi Sports Stadium
The stand at Baba Yara Sports Stadium is not merely a structure; it is a layered record of Kumasi’s sporting history, built in 1971. The most distinct feature is the west stand, which was completely rebuilt for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008. It replaced the original concrete with a two-tier structure featuring press boxes and corporate suites, separated from the pitch by transparent panels designed to stop pitch invasions.
The ground itself is a natural grass pitch, surrounded by a synthetic running track that defines its dual purpose. The atmosphere is dictated by the rhythm of the track as much as the game; the supporters fill with supporters who camp in the final third. The floodlights, fixed during the 2020–2021 renovation, illuminate the field under the night sky.
The stadium holds 40,528 spectators, making it the largest in Ghana. It has hosted the African Cup of Nations three times, most notably in 2008, when the new facilities were still fresh. The pitch has also seen high-stakes qualification matches, including the playoff against Nigeria, where capacity was approved for every seat. However, the ground’s recent history includes a setback; in September 2024, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked its international status after the pitch deteriorated due to church services held on the field, a decision that followed months of neglect. The stadium remains the home of Asante Kotoko FC.
