Bakcell Arena
Baku, Azerbaijan
Formerly: 8th Kilometer Stadium, Neftçi Arena, Palms Sports Arena
The steel skeleton that holds up the current roof was visible for years. When the structure finally closed, the result was a compact bowl where the stands sit close to the pitch.
The most striking feature is the truss roof itself. The seating is arranged in a single tier that wraps around the field.
Construction began on a site previously known as the 8th Kilometer Stadium, but the current building is entirely new, having opened on September 14, 2012. It was developed by the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan.
The capacity sits at 11,000, a figure that has not changed since the opening. The attendance record was set on August 3, 2017, when Gabala hosted Panathinaikos in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.
Zira FK are the current tenants. Before that, it was Neftçi Arena, and before that, Bakcell Arena. The history of the name does not change the architecture: the steel roof and the concrete stands remain the same, anchored on Yusif Safarov str. 4.
The ground also hosted the 2022–23 Azerbaijan Cup Final on June 3, 2023, between Neftçi and Gabala.
