Balmoor exists because Peterhead had nowhere else to go. Recreation Park, the club's old ground, was sold to the supermarket chain Safeway, and the move into a purpose-built stadium became one of the reasons Peterhead were voted into the Scottish Football League in 2000.

The name has not changed since the gates opened in 1997, and no sponsor has ever bought the naming rights. A branch of We Buy Any Car once stood close enough to the turnstiles to confuse online maps, but the confusion never reached the deeds.

The record crowd came on 20 January 2013, for a Scottish Third Division tie against Rangers: 4,855 through the gates, and Francisco Sandaza settled it in the 29th minute for a 1–0 Rangers win. Balmoor has not taken a bigger gate since.

The ground has never staged a cup final — Peterhead's run to the 2016 Scottish Challenge Cup final was played out at Hampden Park instead — and nothing beyond football has been staged there, no concerts, no representative fixtures. Peterhead go into 2025–26 in Scottish League One.
