Banjul Mini Stadium (King George V Stadium)

Banjul, Gambia

Formerly: King George V Stadium, KG5

Banjul Mini Stadium carries the name of a king it was never named after by the people who use it — KG5, short for King George V, from the years when the Gambia sat under British rule.

At 3,000 seats, it holds a fraction of what the Independence Stadium in Bakau takes.

The pitch itself tells the more recent story. What stood for decades as a bare colonial-era ground was rebuilt in 2011, when BOA Construction carried out the work under a contract with GAMWORKS, the Gambian Agency for the Management of Public Works, as part of the agency's third public works programme. The reconstruction, costed at 9.6 million dalasi, replaced the old surface with artificial turf and reopened the stadium on 26 February 2011 — a rehabilitation rather than a rebuild from nothing, and one that gave the capital a venue that could host football regardless of season or rainfall.

It sits on Daniel Goddard Street in the heart of Banjul, a stadium sized to its city rather than to ambition.
