Barton Park Field 1
Sydney, Australia
Formerly: St George Stadium, St George Soccer Stadium
Barton Park Field 1 is a football pitch in Banksia, a suburb in the Bayside Council area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The ground is part of the Barton Park Recreational Precinct, which also includes tennis courts, multi-sport courts, and a playground. It is currently used by St George Saints for their National Premier Leagues NSW matches.
The site has a significant history. The original facility opened as St George Stadium in March 1978, with the grandstand opening in 1979. It was owned and managed by the Bayside Council. The stadium was a major venue in the National Soccer League era. The highest recorded attendance at the venue was 11,221 for the 1984 NSL Grand Final second leg between Sydney Olympic and South Melbourne Hellas, which South Melbourne won to claim the championship. Other notable events included the 1983 NSL Premiership decider where St George FC won its only NSL title, and a visit by Pelé on November 10, 1990, to kick off a match between St George and Marconi, which drew approximately 4,000 spectators. The venue also hosted Socceroos matches.
The original St George Stadium was deemed unsafe in 2008, closed to the public, and demolished in early 2023. It underwent a $51.7 million redevelopment funded by the New South Wales Government, with architectural and landscape design by MODE Design. The new facility, officially named Barton Park Sports Complex (with the main grandstand renamed the Frank Arok Grandstand in honor of the legendary St George FC coach), reopened in May 2024.
The redevelopment replaced the original capacity of approximately 12,000 (with a 2,500-seat grandstand) with a new capacity of 1,500 for Field 1, featuring a 450-seat spectator grandstand. The playing surface is natural grass. The first match at the newly refurbished Barton Park was played on May 4, 2024, where St George Saints defeated Sydney Olympic 2–1.
