The Barys Arena presents a specific architecture defined by its purpose. The interior is built for the cold. The seating tiers rise in a continuous curve, meaning there are no blind corners; the view from any seat is unobstructed.

The most striking feature is the central scoreboard, a massive four-sided cylinder that hangs low enough to be clearly readable from the highest row. It displays not just the score, but real-time replays and advertisements in Kazakh and Russian, framing the rink below. The ice itself is pristine white, contrasting with the blue seating and the dark tones of the players' kits. The boards surrounding the rink are lined with transparent plexiglass, ensuring the sound of skates cutting the ice carries through to the spectators.

Constructed for the 2015 Asian Winter Games, the arena was intended to be a lasting legacy for Astana. It now serves as the home for HC Barys, the city's team in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The atmosphere inside is distinct; it is quieter than a football stadium but intense during play. The artificial ice surface requires constant maintenance to prevent the surface from becoming uneven, a task often visible in the early moments before the puck drops.

The exterior, visible in some photographs, is a sleek, metallic structure with large glass panels reflecting the overcast sky of the capital. It sits on Turan Avenue, a major thoroughfare, making it easily accessible by public transport. The arena has hosted various events beyond hockey, including boxing matches and esports tournaments, but the hockey games remain the primary draw. The capacity allows for a significant crowd, creating a wall of noise when the home team scores. It is a functional space, built for speed and precision, reflecting the modern sporting ambitions of Kazakhstan.
