The stadium sits away from the old ground, out in the Wolfswinkel district, because SC Freiburg finally ran out of room to grow the Dreisamstadion where the club had played since 1954. That older ground carried five different names over the decades before the club walked away from it entirely rather than trying to patch it again.

What opened at Achim-Stocker-Straße in October 2021 was built from nothing on a new site, not bolted onto the old one, and the delay to get there was not architectural — the pandemic pushed the original 2020 target back by more than a year. The street itself carries the name of the club's former president, a detail that ties the building to the person who pushed for it rather than to a sponsor.

Of the 34,700 capacity, a notable share stays on its feet: roughly a third of the ground is standing terracing rather than seats, which keeps the atmosphere closer to the old Dreisamstadion than a fully seated bowl would. The naming rights have moved before and will likely move again, which is why the ground has already answered to half a dozen commercial titles even in its short life, on top of the string of names its predecessor carried.

The pitch is natural grass, unremarkable in itself, but consistent with a club that has built its identity on developing players and staying competitive on a comparatively modest budget rather than on stadium spectacle.
