Béke téri Stadion

The name over the gate has changed more than the ground itself. Built for WMFC, the works team fielded by the Weiss Manfréd industrial concern in Csepel, the stadium carried its founder's name — Weiss Manfréd Sporttelep, later WMFC-pálya — until the ground beneath it, politically as much as physically, shifted. Nationalisation after the Second World War stripped the industrialist's name from the gate and replaced it with Béke téri Stadion, the Stadium on Peace Square, a label drawn less from football than from the vocabulary of the new Hungarian People's Republic.

Hungarian-language sources place the original build somewhere in the 1930s; the more specific account puts the works starting in 1940 and the ground opening in 1941, on Béke tér in the Csepel district south of the city centre. Csepel FC, the club that grew out of that works team, still plays here, on a pitch that has stayed natural grass through every change of ownership and name.

What's missing from the record says as much as what's in it: no architect on file, no account of a rebuild, no attendance figures worth citing. The stadium's history is carried almost entirely by the names it has shed, not by anything that happened on the pitch.
