The Estadio Benito Villamarín stands in the Heliópolis quarter of Seville. The original architect’s 1912 design was completed in 1923, and the ground opened as the Estadio de la Exposición in 1929 to mark the Ibero-American Exposition. With a capacity of just 18,000, it looked small even then. The northern and southern stands were extended in 1958, demolished and rebuilt between 1971 and 1973, and then reshaped again for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The southern stand was turned into a three-tier structure in 2016–2017, swelling the capacity to 60,721. The club voted to restore the Benito Villamarín name in 2010 after a decade as Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera. The ground has hosted two 1982 World Cup matches for Brazil and the 2019 Copa del Rey Final, where Valencia beat Barcelona 2–1. The official attendance record was set on May 19, 2024, during a La Liga match against Real Sociedad, when 59,916 spectators filled the stands.
