Bosuilstadion

Bosuilstadion is not a monument to permanence. It sits in the Deurne district of Antwerp. The ground opened in 1923 and for decades it held crowds of nearly 60,000. That number is gone now, replaced by a cautious 21,000 after the latest phase of construction stripped away the old eastern stand in May 2025.

There is a quietness to the place that belies its history. It hosted the replay of the 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup final, where Sporting Lisbon carved out a 1-0 victory over MTK Budapest, and it witnessed the semi-final defeat of Belgium by West Germany in 1972, when the hosts clawed their way back only to fall short. But the roar of those days is distant. The stadium is currently undergoing work on its eastern flank, a temporary structure costing millions erected to bridge the gap until permanent seats are installed.

What remains is the pitch, natural grass, and the identity of Royal Antwerp FC. The name 'Bosuilstadion' translates roughly to 'Owl Stadium', taken from the nearby Lusthof Boschuil estate, a detail that anchors the venue to the local landscape rather than the global game. It has hosted concerts and job fairs as often as international matches, the last of which was a friendly against Brazil in 1988. Since then, the focus has shifted inward, to the domestic league and the slow process of rebuilding. The ground does not try to impress; it simply exists, a working club facility that has seen its peaks and valleys without pretending either was the last.
