Broadfield Stadium

The ground belongs to Crawley Borough Council, not to the club that fills it. The council built it and opened it in July 1997, moving Crawley Town out of Town Mead into a stadium with three stands — one seated side and two behind the goals — and nothing at all along the east.

That open side survived until the club's promotion forced the question. Reaching League Two in 2011 meant meeting the Football League's minimum of 5,000 seats, so work on an East Stand began in February 2012 and was finished by 2 April, adding 2,122 seats. Capacity has since settled at just over six thousand.

By then the ground had already had its loudest night. In January 2011, with Crawley still in the National League, the club knocked out Championship side Derby County 2-1, Sergio Torres scoring in the 94th minute — cup football has its own rules, and the tie is still cited among the heaviest upsets by a non-league club. A decade later Marcelo Bielsa brought Leeds United to the ground in the same competition, which drew a different sort of attention to a stadium of this size.

The name has moved around more than the structure. It was The Checkatrade.com Stadium from 2013, The People's Pension Stadium from late 2018, and Broadfield again from the 2022/23 season.

Crawley Town are not the only tenants. Brighton & Hove Albion Women have rented the ground since 2018 for Women's Super League fixtures, and the Seychelles national side have played here. The club itself nearly went under in 2006, carrying debts of £1.8m before its creditors relented.
