Budapest Airport Aréna
Budapest, Hungary
Formerly: Lőrinci Sportcsarnok
The Budapest Airport Aréna presents a modern face to the 18th district, but it sits on a site that has only recently changed its purpose. The building at Thököly út 5 replaced the older Lőrinci Sportcsarnok, which stands as a reminder of the area’s sporting history. The new structure arrived in 2023, a replacement rather than an addition.
The most striking feature is the scale of the investment that brought it into being. Funding came largely from the club itself, supported by TAO contributions, while the local municipality covered the remainder. The architects behind the project, Kiskarándi Nánási Ilona and Magyar Mihály, earned recognition for their work in sustainable building, a detail that fits the timing of a new build in an established neighbourhood.
Inside, the arena holds 1,000 spectators on a wooden parquet floor. It is designed for handball, though it can host other events. The capacity is modest by international standards, but for a club navigating the Nemzeti Bajnokság I, it offers a permanent base.
