Bygdøhus Idrettshall
Oslo, Norway
Bygdøhus Idrettshall stands on Huk Aveny 45, where a structure has served the local community since 1939. That original hall, built for Bygdø Idrettslag, was Norway’s oldest indoor sports facility at the time of its completion. It remained in use until 2002, when poor condition forced its demolition. The current building opened in April 2004, replacing the predecessor in a project managed by Stiftelsen Bygdøhus, a foundation formed from Oslo municipality, the state, and local clubs including Bygdø Badmintonklubb and Huk Fotballklubb.
The indoor hall holds 1,000 spectators and hosts a range of activities. Aker Topphåndball, a women’s handball team in the REMA 1000-ligaen, plays here. The venue also accommodates fencing, tennis, badminton, basketball, and curling. Outside, an artificial turf pitch with a capacity of 500 can be covered with ice for skating in winter.
The site has hosted national competitions. Norwegian National Championships (NM) in fencing took place in 2021. Pole sport events were held in 2016 and 2017. The Oslo International Wushu Open occurred in 2019. In October 2021, a gas cylinder was thrown against the building, causing a fire; four minors were apprehended.
The venue has no sponsored name changes and is known simply as Bygdøhus or Bygdøhus Idrettshall. The official website is bygdoehus.no. The facility remains a central point for local sport in Oslo.
