Campo Estrela

The first grass football pitch in Portugal was laid here in 1955 — not in Lisbon, not in Porto. Campo Estrela stands south of Évora's historic centre, on land once known as Ferragial da Estrela.

The ground opened on 15 June 1914 for Ateneu Desportivo Eborense, making it the third-oldest working football ground in the country, behind Estádio do Bessa and Campo da Constituição.

A remodelling in 1950 was overtaken by what followed. Promotion from the II Divisão in 1951–52 set off four years of repair, expansion and new infrastructure, after which the ground was rated the best in the Alentejo and among the best in Portugal.

The results that fixed the ground's reputation came in the decade after, while Lusitano were in the top flight: Porto beaten 3–2 and Sporting 2–1 in 1956/57, Benfica 4–0 in 1957/58, and Porto again 2–0 in the Portuguese Cup in 1954/55. A friendly against Benfica back in 1932 had finished 4–1.

The Évora derby against Juventude de Évora is played here. In 2020 the municipality halted an attempt to erect an events marquee, which had no licence; in 2024–25 the club began building new stands at a separate site, the Complexo Desportivo da Silveirinha.
