Cardinal Stadium

The ground opened in 1998 carrying the branding of Papa John's, the pizza chain founded by John Schnatter; in July 2018, after a scandal involving Schnatter, the University of Louisville stripped the sponsor's name away and left the venue as plain Cardinal Stadium. In January 2023 the naming rights went to L&N Federal Credit Union, and that is the name it carries now.

It opened as a horseshoe of 42,000 seats, replacing an older Cardinal Stadium out at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds — that predecessor stood until 2019, when it was demolished. In 2010 the east side gained the Flight Deck, lifting the ground to 55,000. Then, in 2018 and 2019, the open north end was closed off with roughly 6,000 more seats, finishing the bowl.

The record crowd came into that completed bowl on 25 November 2023, when 59,225 watched the Louisville Cardinals meet the Kentucky Wildcats. Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour date on 17 July 2023 remains the highest-grossing event held here at $6.45 million, and Taylor Swift drew 52,138 in June 2018, weeks before the sponsor's name came down. The United States women's national team have played here; so, in earlier years, did the state's high schools, until 2009.
