Carlos Tartiere
Oviedo, Spain
Formerly: Campo de Buenavista, Nuevo Carlos Tartiere, Nuevo Estadio Municipal Carlos Tartiere, NMR Carlos Tartiere
The original stadium, which began as Campo de Buenavista in 1932, closed and was demolished. This building replaced it after construction started in 1998.
It is the only stadium in Oviedo. The pitch is cut from natural grass, flat and bright against the grey tones of the structure. There are no running tracks; the stands press close to the touchline. On a matchday the space fills with people.
When the Spanish side played here in 2015, they were playing Slovakia, and the result was a straightforward win. The club has used the ground since its opening in 2000, and while the name has shifted with sponsorship, everyone still calls it Carlos Tartiere. The old stadium had hosted Michael Jackson in 1992 and three World Cup group matches in 1982, but those games belong to the demolished building. Here, the games are played in real time.
