Carrow Road

Eighty-two days: that is how long the builders took to put up the ground that Norwich City still play on. Norwich won it 4–3 in front of 29 779 people.

That gap is the story of the place. By 1937, with the Barclay End roofed over, Carrow Road could take 38 000. Then came the Ibrox disaster of 1971 and the safety rules that followed it, and the figure fell to 20 000 almost overnight. It climbed back to 28 392 by 1979, and after the Taylor Report the terraces went for good and the ground became all-seated. Space was reworked in 2010 to lift the capacity to 27 000, and a safe standing section arrived for the 2024/25 season.

The pitch was rebuilt too. In 2004 the club spent £700 000 replacing natural grass with a hybrid surface stitched through with synthetic fibres.

The ground has never been renamed — it is called after the street it stands on, and has been since the first day.
