The ground the Turkish football association sent to the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup was the only one in that tournament to fill up.

The replacement was finished in May 2024 at a cost of around €1.25 million, and a sun protection cover system went in the same year.

Rize Atatürk Stadium, with its running track between the crowd and the touchline, was demolished in 2014; work on the replacement had begun on 13 December 2007, and Fenerbahçe came for the inauguration match in August 2009. Design and application services were handled by the Turkish firm MNG Targem.

For its first six years the name on the ground was Yeni Rize Şehir Stadyumu — Rize City Stadium. There were proposals to attach Atatürk's name to the new ground as it had been attached to the old one, but nothing came of them, and on 22 August 2015 it became Çaykur Didi Stadium .
