The artificial pitch was the argument. When Color Line Stadion opened on 16 April 2005, it became the first ground in Norway's top division laid with a synthetic surface heated from below, and the choice was disputed across the country that year. The surface has been renewed since, replaced in 2021 with a Saltex MTRX Ultra system carrying FIFA Quality PRO certification.

The ground stands at Volsdalsneset, a growing district east of the centre, and it took over from Kråmyra Stadion, which had served Aalesunds FK since 1977. Nothing structural has changed since: no rebuilt stands, no expansion. The attendance record was set in the first summer, on 3 August 2005 against Hamarkameratene, when 10,903 came in — a figure that has stood since.

Outside the entrance is a statue of John Arne Riise, who played for the club. It was known plainly as "The Footballer" until 2018, when it was officially named after him.

Norway's under-21 side has played here, including a 0–3 defeat to Cyprus on 3 September 2010; the senior national team has not, the capacity being too small.
