Cooks Square Park
Nothing about Cooks Square Park suggests a stadium built to impress. It is a suburban football ground in East Maitland that has spent decades quietly serving as home to Maitland FC, the club known locally as the Magpies, and also hosts Adamstown Rosebud FC. The grandstands date to the 1970s, and for most of the ground's life that was the extent of the story: a natural grass pitch, a modest capacity of 350, and a schedule filled with regional league fixtures rather than headlines.
What changed the picture was a run of fixtures that briefly put the ground on a bigger stage. In August 2017, Maitland hosted A-League side Newcastle Jets in a friendly and were beaten 4-0 in front of roughly 900 spectators, well beyond the venue's official capacity. Two years later, the club drew a home tie in the Australia Cup against Central Coast Mariners, and later that same year staged a Northern NSW Premier League semi-final against Lions FC. None of it changed the club's status, but it gave the ground a handful of nights that outsized its usual crowds.
The most recent chapter has been structural rather than sporting. Between 2022 and 2024, the council put roughly a million dollars into the site: a new training pitch, an expanded playing surface, and a new change-room building. It is the kind of investment that rarely makes news beyond the local paper, but it points to a ground being maintained for the long term rather than left to age quietly. In December 2022, the club also set up a big screen for supporters to watch the Socceroos face Argentina at the World Cup — a reminder that even a ground this size can pull a crowd when the occasion is right.
