The County Cricket Ground in Hove carries its history in the timber of its main stand, not in a plaque. The Arthur Gilligan Stand, known simply as the main stand, dates to the 1890s, when architect F.T. Cawthorn submitted plans for a new structure. It sits on a nine-acre plot that was a barley field until 1871, before Edward Spary oversaw the conversion of the agricultural land into a cricket venue. He managed the careful removal of turf from the club's previous home, the Royal Brunswick Ground.

The ground opened on Whit Monday, 1872, on what was then Hove Farm. The club purchased the land from the Stanford Estate in 1886 for £3,500, having paid off a £1,500 loan in 1884. Early facilities included a concrete boundary and young trees planted around the perimeter. The playing surface remains natural grass, maintained seasonally, with hard wooden benches recalling the limited seating of the early twentieth century.

The total capacity sits at 6,000, with 4,000 seats specified. It is the home of Sussex County Cricket Club (Sussex CCC), and cricket is the reason the ground exists. The venue hosted a 1999 Cricket World Cup Group A match between South Africa and India, a win for the South Africans by 4 wickets, and two Women's Ashes Test matches against Australia in 1987 and 2005. Sussex CCC claimed their first County Championship title here in 2003 and their third in 2007.

The ground has hosted major concerts by Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Little Mix, alongside an official Olympic torch event for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The annual Guy Fawkes Night fireworks brought over 7,500 attendees in 2019, a number that would see the table go out of the window for a cricket match.
