Ask why Vila Belmiro matters and the answer has little to do with size. The ground has kept a neighbourhood scale even while hosting continental finals — the 1962 Copa Libertadores decider against Peñarol, the 1998 Copa CONMEBOL final against Rosario Central, and the 2010 Copa do Brasil final against Vitória all played out on the same patch of grass hemmed in by ordinary Vila Belmiro streets.

The ground's official name honours Urbano Caldeira, a former club secretary, a change made in 1933 after the stadium had opened simply as Campo do Santos. Rain pushed the opening fixture back by ten days, and Santos eventually beat Ipiranga 2-1 once the pitch was finally used.

Its record crowd tells its own story: 32,986 people packed in for a goalless draw with Corinthians, a night remembered as much for stands partially giving way under the weight as for the football itself. Vila Belmiro has also carried life outside the game — a Joe Louis boxing bout, concerts by Menudo and Luan Santana, Brazil's first American football match, and, in January 2023, the wake held for Pelé, whose entire career was built on this pitch.
