The ground opened before it opened. Rugby league came first, on 27 December 2006, and football followed on 1 January 2007, but the official launch waited until 3 August that year, when Manchester United came to Doncaster for the occasion.

That order of events fits the way the place has been run since. It was built in 2006–07 by Keepmoat Homes, which also took the naming rights, with ACP as architects and Pacy & Wheatley handling the interiors. The stadium itself cost around £20m; counted as part of the wider Lakeside Sports Complex, the figure reaches £32m.

Three clubs share it: Doncaster Rovers, Doncaster Rovers Belles and Doncaster RLFC, the last of which explains why the pitch is a Desso GrassMaster hybrid, natural grass stitched with synthetic fibre, in place since 2007 and resurfaced in June 2019 without changing type.

The record crowd of 15,001 came against Leeds United on 1 April 2008, a 0–1 defeat. The 2013 FA Women's Cup final was played here and won by Arsenal Ladies. England have used it too, including a 20–0 win over Latvia in 2021. Rugby league has brought the Four Nations, the 2021 World Cup and Challenge Cup finals; a 2013 IBF title fight and the 2008 Britbowl final also passed through.
