The ground was laid out for rugby, not football. Stockport RFC played the first match here on 3 September 1891.

What stands there now was shaped mostly by accident and by two decisions taken half a century apart. A fire in 1935 took out one side; the replacement, built in brick and steel, still stands as the Danny Bergara Stand. The other change came in 1995, when the two-tier Cheadle End went up with 5,044 seats and shifted the balance of the ground towards one corner. Terracing survived until 2001, when the last of it came down and Edgeley Park became all-seater. The Railway End was refreshed in 2020.

The attendance record belongs to an afternoon that could not be repeated under the current layout: 27,833 came for an FA Cup tie against Liverpool on 11 February 1950, and County lost it 2-1.

Ownership sits with Stockport Council, which bought the ground in 2015 for £2m and in 2022 granted the club a lease running 250 years.

A redevelopment drawn up to take capacity to between 18,000 and 20,000 was due to begin in 2025. Objections from environmental groups have held it up, and the line has barely moved since.
