El Molinón
Gijón, Spain
Formerly: Stadium El Molinón, Estadio El Molinón, Estadio Municipal El Molinón
Estadio Municipal El Molinón–Enrique Castro "Quini" sits in Gijón, Spain. The ground is old enough to have seen the first televised football match in the country.
The lettering on the wall names the stadium and the club, Real Sporting de Gijón, SAD . The land belonged to a man named Dionisio Cifuentes before Sporting Gijón bought it in 1925, and the first grandstand was built in 1917.
A conversion to an all-seater stadium in 1997–1998 cut the capacity from roughly 42,000 to 25,885. The number rose again after a renovation finished in 2011, and a new VIP stand added in late 2023 or 2024 brought it to 29,371. The playing surface is natural grass.
The stadium hosted the 1920 Copa del Rey Final, where Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao. It also staged matches during the 1982 World Cup, including a game between West Germany and Austria that is remembered for the teams' agreement to let both advance at Algeria's expense. The attendance record is 42,000. The ground has hosted concerts by Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney, and it served as a filming location for the film Volver a empezar . The address is on Avenida del Molinón.
